2018 has turned out to be an even bigger year for genre film and so far this year, we've received some truly phenomenal projects — and there's still half a year left to go! We thought it'd be fun to give a rundown of our 10 favorite films to drop so far this year, which tends to be dominated by genre. 

The 80s may forever be remembered as the golden era of the action film, but the action films of the 90s and their massive budgets give the previous era a good run for their money. Due to better practical effects and heightened by the dawn of computer generated imagery, the 90s action films could do something the 80s couldn't do quite as effectively: blur the lines between action and science fiction.

In several respects, the 90s changed the face of the action blockbusters — some may even say it took its "face off" — but they also continued to push the franchise trend solidified in the 80s, and even propelled the action film toward increasingly more fantastic environments due to the dawn of CGI. However, for the sake of our list, we've stripped out the sci-fi (which would dominate the list) and kept only the grounded and more "realistic" action films, which we think are the crème de la crème of 90s action and deliver all the visceral thrills that one would expect from a genre pumped full of testosterone. 

Cinema is no stranger to the sequel,  but nowadays, it seems like just about anything gets a follow-up film — even the surprise indie Call Me By Your Name and the Netflix flop Bright have forthcoming sequels announced. While most of them span the gamut from bad to good, very few sequels are truly exceptional. Even more rare are the sequels that manage to surpass their predecessors. 

2017 was another incredible and exciting year for film, complete with a diverse array of unbelievable indies and higher caliber sequels than we've had in recent year's past. Like we'll probably say every year: it was difficult to whittle down our favorites to a list of ten. But, as is the end of the year tradition, we've braved through the difficulty and crafted our picks for what we consider to be the most unique and masterful standout films of the past year.

Ho ho ho, and Yippee ki yay, motherf*cker! Tis the season for German terrorists, botched office parties, and one of the most badass action movies of all time: Die Hard. Even though the film was released in the summer of 1988, it's since become a Christmas staple, and it's easily one of our favorites here at Viddy Well. Since this is the season of giving and all, we decided that we'd share some of our favorite facts about the film and its production.

Opening credits can be used in a number of ways. They can be some enticing eye candy, dazzling us before our feature, or they can help serve the plot, pushing it forward and setting the tone before the story even begins. There are so many solid opening credit sequences, but these are ten that I personally love most.
