Godzilla: King Of Posters
For the past 65 years, Godzilla has been dazzling audiences with its social/political themes, complex mythology, and thrilling alien/monster action. It still remains, according to Guinness World Records, as the longest continuously running movie franchise, having been ongoing production from 1954 to present, consisting of 35 films (32 produced by Toho and three Hollywood films). The popularity of the films has led to the franchise expanding to other media as well, such as television, music, literature, and video games.
Godzilla is easily one of the most recognizable symbols in Japanese pop culture worldwide, and it also remains as the most well-known facet of Japanese film. It popularized the kaiju and tokusatusu subgenres in Japanese entertainment, with the franchise capturing the imaginations of audiences and artists alike.
In addition to creating an abundance of memorable cinematic moments, Godzilla has also spawned its fair share of badass poster art, which can sometimes provoke a more inspired imagining than the films themselves. Today, we thought we’d explore Godzilla’s history through some of the poster art we love form the franchise. There’s a lot of really great posters to pull from, but we tend to favor the more intricate, vibrant, or downright odd offerings. The foreign film posters from Poland and the former Czechoslovakia, in particular, are very intriguing. Two of them aren’t technically Godzilla posters, but we thought they were cool, so we included them too. Anyways, we hope you enjoy!
