3 Cinematic Universes We'd Like To See
Article by Anthony Cleveland
Say what you will about the cinematic universe trend, but episodic films can be pretty fun when they're done correctly. Plus, it’s always great to have another chapter to look forward to every year or so. Most of the great franchises are either in production or are being reinvigorated, but there’s still plenty of good ones not being discussed or explored.
Here's three cinematic universes we'd like to see explored:
- AMERICAN FOLK STORIES
Think of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, then think of it as not a complete piece of trash. America is full of folk tales and legends that should be brought back to the screen for the next generation before they’re forgotten. Without 1995’s Tall Tale most children from the 90s would have never heard of Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, or John Henry. They’re all great, but there’s so much more to explore here, like: Bigfoot, Johnny Appleseed, Annie Christmas, Joe Magarac, Alfred Bulltop Stormalong, New England Witches, the Jersey Devil, the Wendigo and the Jackalope!
- UNIVERSAL MONSTERS
No! Bad Universal Studios, bad! *Rubs nose in Tom Cruise’s The Mummy* Bad!
*Points to The Shape of Water* Good, Universal, good! Try again!
So this one's had a few rough starts, but if Universal were to try again, it would be it’s third attempt — and we all know the old proverb that third time's the charm. If they were to take note from The Shape of Water or even just let del Toro run the show, they could have a hit franchise.
- H.P. LOVECRAFT UNIVERSE
Well, if we’re not going to see del Toro over at Universal, can we at least see him helm a Lovecraft universe? Every film he’s done is inspired in some way by his work. Its abundantly clear the guy gets the source material. Plus, he already has pre-production work done with At the Mountain’s of Madness.
This one seems like a no brainer! C’mon Hollywood, get with the program already!
