Viddy Well Recommends: Blood Diner
Article by Anthony Cleveland
"The assailant has a clever in one hand and his genitals in the other." When I heard that, I'd knew I'd love this film.
From the beginning of Blood Diner, I felt a strangely familiar vibe. A deranged, blood-covered uncle hands his nephews an Egyptian necklace -- that should've been the first cue. After that, it was one familiarity after another; the sacrifices, the blood "buffet" -- I realized then that I was watching a love letter to Herschel Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast.
Blood Feast was one of the first spatter films and influenced many horror filmmakers. Its extremely cheesy and exploitive, but nonetheless a very fun film.
Blood Diner is the same plot with a few little differences. Instead of one maniac trying to conjure an Egyptian goddess with body parts of women, we have 2 brothers who run a vegetarian diner -- if it's not clear yet, the 80s are strong in this film.
Every kill in this film is fun and creative. The fx are inventive, but at times also feel lazy. For example, there is a jar with the uncle's brain and eyes in it. The eyes never really move or emote while it speaks.
Thats one of very few flaws though. Overall the film kept up its pace and delivered what the trailer promised:
Highlights include:
- A Topless Aerobic Massacre.
- Dumb Cops tossing body parts into trash bags without gloves.
- A bimbo split down the middle with a clever.
- And a stomach with razor sharp teeth.
What do you think? Have you seen the film? If not, interested now? We want to know. Share your thoughts and feelings in the comments section below, and, as always, remember to viddy well!
