Contributor's Corner: Secluded Island Selections
During the dawn of Viddy Well, we asked each interested contributor to fill out the same questionnaire. The questions spanned from grave to goofy, but the replies were nearly always unexpected. This week we'll take a look at the following question:
You've been banished to an isolated island. While society no longer wishes to bask in your presence, they are kind enough to provide you with a TV/VCR combo. You can take three tapes, which do you bring?
Jake Bottiglieri:
This question is very hard for me, so I’m gonna just answer with the first three that come to my head:
• The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for popcorn entertainment.
• 2001: A Space Odyssey for introspection/meditation.
• Cloud Atlas for verisimilitude/hope.
Anthony Cleveland:
They banish me to a desert island with a TV/VCR & 3 VHS tapes...? Is there even electricity on this mother fucker?! Well, shit I guess I only get to look at box art... So, that'd be: Escape from New York, Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla, and Frankenhooker, but there's a stipulation there, with the third one; it has to come with the working "you wanna date" audio pressable.
Dave Mcdermand:
Cast Away, Swiss Family Robinson, How to Survive on a Deserted Island for Dummies. Duh.
Blake Haughton:
The Matrix, Deadpool, and any of the Star Wars movies, except for Revenge of the Sith -- I just hate that one because it bumbles through Anakin's conclusion, leaving out a lot of important details, like the founding of the rebellion. Ideally, I'd take A New Hope, but I could also live with Phantom Menace, too, just because Liam Neeson kicks ass.
Alex Swartzentruber:
The Shining. I would want to remember snow. I could use it to keep from going insane or live out my own version of it on the island if I did lose my marbles...
[When asked if there were two additional films, Alex fixed vacantly with deranged intensity and did not speak while ominous music swells..]
Aaron Haughton:
Gummo because the soundtrack, the vignettes, and the wonderful lines to chant while left alone, like "Nothing new for trash like you," or "Stoopid rabbit!" The Holy Mountain because this will be good for when I get sun baked and dried up, and Stroszek because it will ease me into the acceptance of this shit situation, and I will find the courage to kill myself in the most absurd, ironic way possible.
